This is the second post for my Travelling Tips: From a frequent traveller series.  These tips are geared towards the flight.

1.  Bring a hydrating face mask and face moisturizer for the plane - As most of us know, long airplane rides, stress, and a new environment can be disastrous for our skin.  I always feel so dry in an airplane and so I have gotten into the habit of using a sheet face mask that is easy to use and it doesn't make a mess.  I also like to keep my face extra hydrated.

2.  Bring a blanket -  I always pack a small fleece blanket in my carry on.  No matter the length of the flight.  During international flights, the cabin becomes incredibly cold and the little blanket "thing" that they give you does not help.  BYOB

3.  Wear glasses - not contacts - This tip is pretty self-explanatory.  If you are going on an international flight do not wear your contacts.  You will most likely be sleeping on the plane and it's not very clean.  Tray tables do not get cleaned!

I have been swimming for as long as I remember.  I swam on a swim team for a decade and then a varsity team.  From personal experience, I know how good swimming is a source of exercise.  I also know how hard it is to start. We would stop swimming for the summer break and return in the fall.  If you want to start swimming – keep reading.

Pool – find a local pool or a beach to swim.  [Please note: swimming at a beach is much harder and keep in mind of your swimming skills.] Many places will offer packages that include so many pool sessions a month.  Also, if you are a university/college student you may have access to your schools’ pool.

Buying a bathing suit – This is more important than you think.  If you are going to be at the pool a lot, I suggest that you buy a practice swimsuit.  I recommend speedo endurance.  It is a little bit more expensive, but you will save money in the long run.  Here’s a little information:  a bathing suit made out of polyester is the best.  It is more chlorine resistant.  Avoid materials such as nylon.  You have to be careful when some suits will say “chlorine resistant”, which is not really true.   If the suit feels like silk it is probably not very good.  However, these suits are often more “pretty”.  An endurance suit is often more rough to the touch.

Maintain your suit – There are products that you can purchase that can extend the life of your suit.  These are soaps that are specifically designed for removing chlorine yet they are gentle enough.  Do not EVER put your suit in the washing machine.  It is very very bad.  Always soak your suit in cold water (with the special soap if you have it).  And let it air dry.  Do not leave it in your bag after swimming, although I am certainly guilty of this. For men, buy a jammer or a speedo – do not use your regular bathing suit because the loose material causes drag. As a result, it may be possible to see between your legs or you may loose your suit.

Gear – Bathing cap: You will need a bathing cap (swim cap) if you have long hair.  I like the silicon ones because they are more comfortable but they do fall off more than the latex ones.  If you are competing I would certainly suggest using a latex cap.  Goggles: a well fitting pair of goggles is a must.  No – it is not normal to have water in your eyes because of a leaking pair of goggles.  The best trick to find a pair that fits is to suction them onto your eyes without the strap around your head.  If the goggles quickly fall down – they aren’t right for you.  If they stay on quite well then you have found your pair.

Training - I have created a swimming schedule and a practice list for all levels of swimming.  Check them out here [coming soon].  If you are just looking to get in shape, swimming a 2 or 3 times a week is great.  If you are training for a triathlon or are really motivated into getting in great shape you will want to swim upwards of 4 times a week for more than an hour.
I'm very lucky to say that I travel a lot.  This is a wonderful privilege and I am very grateful.  I make one trip to Europe every year from Canada.  From these trips I have discovered many tips and tricks.  I hope these are of use to you!

1.  Pack Less - This is a great tip because often times you will do a little shopping on a trip and realize that you really don't have enough room.  What I like to do is to - put clothes in my carry on so there's even more room my suitcase.

Also, little travel laundry detergents are great to bring - especially if your going on a longer trip.  They will allow you to pack less.

2.  Be Very Nice to the Bartender - at your hotel.  The best trick is to give them a generous tip on the first night of you're trip and they will become your best friend.  They will tell you about the best restaurants that locals visit and all sorts of different information that you may not get otherwise.  The hostesses or front desk agents must give you information about business that pay them for there advertisement.  Sometimes they will be good restaurants but in my experience - they are really bad.  The bartender however has no such commitment.

3.  Get Groceries - Travelling is very expensive.  Eating out at a restaurant can be over 100$ a day.  Often times I will get a small selection of groceries (fruits, vegetables, yogurts, snacks) for breakfast and/or lunch.  This will save you a lot of money and will help you stay healthy during your trip.
You do not need to spend a lot of money for a good hair mask.  These recipes are great for dry hair, coloured hair and damaged hair.

1.  Avocado & Mango Moisture Making Mask

Recipe: Take half a mango, half of an avocado and some olive oil.

Benefits:  Mango is wonderful for hair because it contains Vitamin A.  Vitamin A is necessary for hair growth because the sebum requires it.  It is a great moisturizer

Avocado is known for being great for your health.  The fruit contains a lot of healthy fats which are important in maintaining healthy hair.  It also contains protein - something we all know helps the quality of the hair.  Avocados have various vitamins, including vitamin E which is important for your scalp.

Olive Oil promotes scalp health and is a great moisturizer for the hair.

2.  RED hair mask (Berries),  Copper (Carrots),  Brown (unsweetened cocoa)

Recipe: A cup of Blended Berries or Carrots, or a couple teaspoons of cocoa, in a cup of olive oil with half of a banana.

Benefits:  Use fruits and vegetables to give your hair colour a boost.   The olive oil and the banana will add some extra moisture and some potassium.

3.  Protein Power Mask

Recipe: 1 raw egg yolk, half coconut oil/ half olive oil, a tablespoon of smooth peanut butter (or peanut paste).

Benefits:  Your hair is made up of protein, and your scalp needs it to grow more hair.  Use this recipe to give your hair that protein boost it needs.  This is perfect for damaged hair.  (You may need to shampoo a couple times to remove everything)

What are your favourite homemade hair masks? I would love to try some new recipes out.

Want red hair?  Great!  Here's how!
(Tips at the end)

Here are some questions that you will want to ask yourself.

Do you want natural looking red hair or unnatural?
Are you ok with spending a bit more money on your hair?
What is your skin tone - warm or cool?

Once you've answered these questions start looking at pictures of red hair.  Did you find something that you like? Great.  If you're going to the salon for the colour, you can skip these steps until the Care/Maintenance section.  If you are making a drastic change, it may be wiser to go to a salon. However, if you are going to do it yourself you should read this.

Now find out if you are cool toned or warm toned.  Most often you would want to stick with the tone that matches your skin.

Shopping for Hair Dye
I would almost always say that you want to stay away from Box Hair dyes. These hair dyes are created for a wide variety of hair colours. This means your hair will most likely go thru more than it should to attain the colour that you want. If you trust yourself, have experience with colouring your hair and are aware that the results will not be like those that you would get at a salon, try it yourself.

You will need to buy a tube of hair dye and a developer.  Developer is peroxide; it will lift your previous colour and help deposit your new colour.  The volume of peroxide that you will use will depend on various factors.  If you are only making a minor adjustment you won't need as much peroxide as someone who is making a more drastic change.  Familiarize yourself with the various volumes of developers  and which corresponds to the process that you are doing.

A great place to find hair dye and developer is Sally's.  They have a wide selection of hair dye colours.  Ion is probably my favourite brand.  http://www.sallybeauty.com.  For me to colour my medium length hair red, it costs me about 7$.  I for one, cannot spend hundreds of dollars on my hair colour every month or so.

Maintenance & Treatments
We all know that red hair is hard to maintain.  I will be honest with you; it his hard, but it does not have to be expensive.  Here's a list of "rules" that you should stick too!

Buy products that won't strip your hair colour.  This includes buying sulfate free shampoo & conditioner.  Make sure that you have a great hair masks: my favourites are Redken and Garnier.  Don't be afraid to make your own hair masks.  I like to use coconut oil and olive oil.  To give your hair colour a bit of a boost - you can add some carrot juice to copper hair or berries for red hair.

Tips
1.  Wash your hair less.  At least every second day if not more!

2.  Take super duper quick showers: water removes hair colour.  Set a timer or an alarm on your phone to alert you after 5 minutes!

3.  If you will be going swimming - before entering the pool put some conditioner on your hair.  This will protect your colour (this works - swimmer approved!).  You can also buy after swimming shampoos.

4.  If your hair is healthy, but it's very fine and limp - add a colour to your hair.  The added colour will increase the size of your hair shaft giving you the appearance of more hair.

5.  Add carrots to your hair masks to add copper tones to your hair or berries onto red hair to brighten your colour before a big event.

RED-Copper :  This beautiful colour has become more and more popular.  The more natural tones are  eye-catching.  To achieve this colour, please refer to my RED HAIR blog post here.

BRIGHT COLOURS:  These are beautiful hair colours.  These colours are bright but please don't be intimidated.  I feel as though these colours can really show your personality.  I always felt different, I always wanted to be different.  A surprisingly easy way to do this is by having blue hair!  Want these hair colours? Check out this blog post to find out more!

Rome, Italy

Rome will forever be one of my favourite places to visit.  The locals are incredibly friendly.  The food is amazing.  The architecture and the art is beautiful. The weather is pretty much always nice.

Do you love art? Architecture? that was made thousands of years ago.  I don't know anyone who wouldn't.  Almost every street in central rome has a beautiful church with works of art.  Look inside all the churches you come across. You may find something extra special, a Caravaggio perhaps?

Length of Trip

If you are planning on visiting Rome, I would suggest that you book for at least 9 days.  There is so much to see that you will not even make a dent.  One week is really not enough to see Rome.  Try booking some tours around the city, you can usually do this thru your carrier.  It would take you years to see everything.

Being Prepared

Bring a pair of great walking shoes.  Rome is a fairly large city and their taxi fair is quite steep.  You will find yourself walking many kilometres a day, but trust me, it'll be worth it.  If you will be travelling during the summer, you will have to bring a hat.  Although you may look like a tourist, the street vendors will often sell the Chinese fan umbrellas: these are great if it's scorching hot (August). It's also a good idea to bring some warmer clothing and jackets for the colder times of the year.

Food

Food is very important to the Italians.  They eat later than we do (8pm) and it is a fairly big ordeal.  It usually consists of a three or four course meal and locals will spend a few hours eating.  If you go to a restaurant where the owner/staff member is urging you to go inside.  Chances are the food is crap.  The cooks who really value their food will not ever do such a thing for their own pride.

You may notice that their isn't all that much breakfast or lunch food.  This is because the Italians will basically really only eat a supper.  Every morning I would go to a "grocery store" or "health food store" and buy myself a small breakfast.  This was much cheaper than going to a restaurant and I could get a healthy meal for myself.

Drinks

If you are a coffee drinker your in luck! Especially if you are not European.  Coffee where I live is pretty bad.  The beans we tend to have make the coffee taste burnt. It's weird.  In Europe however, I absolutely love love love their coffee.  Cappuccinos and espressos all the way.

Another thing that I found was delicious was their Coca Cola.  If you didn't know, every country basically has a different Coke recipe.  I found that the Italian one was much better then the North American version.

Safety

Do not carry a map out in the open or wear a fanny pack.  You just scream tourist.  Most places that's not a big deal but in Italy it is.  You will be a prime candidate for pick pocketing.  Leave your important money and passport in the safe at the hotel or keep it hidden in your shoe.  Go into a store to open your map or to ask for directions.  If you have read anything about Rome you would have been warned against thieves.  I will be honest with you, you will most likely encounter one.  There are other things that you can do to protect your valuables.  Do not put any of your essentials in a bag, or if you must, put it deep inside the bag.  If you carry a purse keep the zipper towards you.  While walking keep your hand on that zipper.

Rome is a beautiful beautiful place. If I could only pick one place to ever travel to. It would be Rome.

Winter: the darkest time of the year.  I live in Canada.  We all live in Igloos,  make fires to keep warm, and we hunt for food. No, this isn't true.  But, what is true - Canada has a long cold winter.  -30C is normal here for the months of January, February and part of March. How do we survive this?  We hibernate. No. We keep a shovel inside the house to make sure that we can shovel ourselves out.  We pray that our cars will start in extreme cold.  We set our alarms to 6am to check if schools are closed. We leave extra early because we have to drive slower.  With all that said - I think I have too much experience with winter. So here are my tips to survive a Canadian winter.

1.  Warm sweaters are a must.  Make sure to have a variety of comfy sweaters.  This will allow you to do some laundry.  I love wearing a big sweater and tights.  I don't care if tights are pants - you don't wear pants with a dress.

2.  Take up cooking.  When you are stuck at home for days on end because your snowed-in, try those new recipes you were thinking about!  Often times when the weather is bad I will gravitate towards junk food. Where I live we have a thing called StormChips.  So, instead of grabbing those chips maybe try to make your own!

3.  Have some family time.  With are busy lives we tend to drift away from our love ones.  When you're all home for the day try to do something all together.  Try a board game, play video games, or even watch a movie.  Take a break from your busy schedule and just have some fun!

4.  Go outside!  Go skiing, sledding, skating or for a walk.  Getting a little bit of exercise and changing your routine is a good thing.  I love walking around campus during the winter.  It's not so big that you're out for long and freezing.  But it's long enough to get some fresh air and a change in scenery.

5.  Catch up with old friends or make new ones! I find during the winter I don't make as many plans as I would during the summer.  It could be the fatigue or just plain laziness.

Other quick tips
1.  Keep your tub full of water in case you lose power
2.  Keep a pair of mitts and a hat in your car. You may need it
3.  Have a battery powered radio for emergencies
4.  Keep a blanket in your car incase you get stuck
5.  Have a shovel in your car just in case (Thanks Laurel!)
